For the most reliable GMC Sierra 1500, look for model years 2021, 2016 to 2018, 2011 to 2012, and 2004. As you can see, the GMC Sierra’s reliability goes back to 2004 due to its stout engine and good crash test results.
If you’re looking for a heavy-duty pickup, the most reliable GMC Sierra 2500HD has high reliability for model years 2020, 2018, 2016, 2014, 2012, 2011, and 2010, all from JD Power’s rankings. Part of the GMC Sierra’s reliability for the 2500HD version is due to the diesel engine which is very well put together.
Unfortunately, there are some GMC Sierra years to avoid, particularly for the 1500 light-duty truck. From 2014 to 2015, the first years of the fourth generation saw some electrical issues with the accessories, such as dashboard gauges and the transfer case for AWD vehicles. These same issues were endemic to the 2012 models from a few years before. Avoid the 2007 model year, too, also for the electrical problems.
Model years 2001 through 2003, and then 2005 and 2006 suffered from low engine reliability scores and not-so-good crash test scores. These model years are probably on the very edge of what you’ll find on our lot for a quality used vehicle anyway.
